Chapter 44. 

I didn’t immediately understand what he was saying. When I hesitated to answer, Jay’s face twisted in shock, misunderstanding me completely.

“…He was your first kiss.”

“No, it’s not like that. Why are you suddenly bringing up Jaden?”

“Don’t call him so affectionately. Call him ‘that guy,’ ‘that bastard,’ ‘that son of a bitch.'”

“What the hell is with you…”

Why was he suddenly bringing up Jaeden? Could he still be bothered by what Suho said by the stream earlier? I couldn’t understand what my past feelings for Jaden had to do with the current situation.

“Was he your first love… something like that? Do you still like him?”

Jay slowly ran his hand up the inside of my thigh, then thrust a finger deep into my opening.

“Ugh.”

“What did that stand-in bastard do to you while I was gone?”

Logically, “stand-in” should refer to the one who came later, but Jay dismissed Jaden as a stand-in. As if he met me before Jaden. 

In truth, there was no need for a stand-in. It was true I had a crush on Jaden, but it was a fleeting feeling that left no trace. Besides, no matter how much I had cared for him, it was none of Jay’s business.

The feelings were long gone, and we weren’t… We weren’t anything at all for him to be jealous over a short past fling, were we? I couldn’t finish the thought that popped into my head. I could naturally feel that my relationship with Jay was slowly changing.

Kim Cha-young’s irritable voice echoed through the conference room. But no one was listening to the director. Everyone was busy checking their watches and sweeping the laptops, documents, and candy wrappers on the table into one pile.

Kim Cha-young’s brows were deeply furrowed into a single line. He kept looking out the window of the high-rise building and checking his phone for new messages. His anxiety was palpable in the click of his shoes’ soles. 

He had shaved, combed his hair, and changed his slippers to sneakers for the first time in a while. However, he hadn’t expected the conference room to be in such a messy state. It was a sight he was so used to that he never considered it a problem.

“Hey, don’t throw that away.”

Kim Woo-joong, with a “Huh?” on his face, put the paper he was holding back on the table.

“What is this?”

“A church bulletin.”

Kim Woo-joong wanted to retort, “Who doesn’t know that?” but with the quick wit of a subordinate, he asked again.

“Since when have you been a Christian?”
