Mu Qianyu immediately dialed his number.

“My, my…..you sure like to meddle, Young Master Su.”

“Only because you’re pretty,” Su Wuji replied lazily. “Just do as I say.”

“Wow. What a kind, considerate man you are.”

There was a faint smile in her voice, but her flawless face remained composed.

As her lashes lowered, her mind drifted to the escalating tensions within the Mu family.

She knew full well how much her grandfather favored her—and that made her a target. Those eager to seize power in the younger generation would naturally set their sights on her. Some might even resort to violence sooner rather than later.

Without realizing it, she set her car keys back in her bag.

Pushing the thoughts aside, she asked, “By the way… why didn’t you cash the check?”

“What’s the point in talking money?” Su Wuji replied cheerfully. “I’m not that shallow.”

“Oh? So the whole city’s wrong when they say Su Wuji is the very model of refinement?”

Mu Qianyu said it with an easy smile, but there was a razor edge beneath the sweetness.

After that night at the Empress Lounge, she’d already written Su Wuji off as a flirtatious scoundrel. If it weren’t for her father’s explicit instructions, she wouldn’t have given him the time of day.

And yet… after her call with Park Yenxi, something had shifted.

Maybe I misjudged him.

“No matter what,” she said softly, “thanks for the warning.”

As she spoke, she slipped off her outer pants with one hand and settled back onto the bed.

Her long, bare legs gleamed in the moonlight—smooth as porcelain, supple and strong. Just the sight of them was enough to make one forget to breathe.

“Oh, and another thing,” she added. “You beat up Mu Zhihui. My fifth uncle and aunt? There’s no way they’ll take this lying down.”

Su Wuji’s voice was light, almost playful.

“Hearing you warn me like that makes me strangely happy. Linzhou’s number one beauty really is as kind as she is lovely…”

He didn’t even get to finish the sentence.

A gruff voice cut in, echoing through the phone:

“Boss, we’ve got the whole supply chain that sold powder to Mu Zhihui. Six people total. We’ve already crushed their limbs and dumped them in the Lin’an River.”

“Xiao Pang! Ever heard of knocking?” Su Wuji’s roar erupted like a volcano. “What if I was doing something private?! I’m on the phone with your future sister-in-law, damn it!”

Click!

The call ended mid-outburst.

Mu Qianyu couldn’t help laughing… but the amusement faded quickly from her face.

Those rumors about Su Wuji—about his violence, his ruthlessness—had been circulating for years. Until now, she’d treated them as just that: rumors.

But tonight, she’d heard the truth with her own ears.

Six men. Broken limbs. Dumped into the Lin’an River.

Could anyone survive that?

More than that—he’d found the entire trafficking ring in just two or three hours.

Even the anti-narcotics division couldn’t move that fast.

So how the hell had Su Wuji pulled it off?

Up until now, she’d thought of him and Xiao Pang as a goofy master-servant pair. But after that call, it was as if a veil had lifted—and what lay beneath was something far more dangerous.

Su Wuji… what kind of person are you, really?

Wrapped in a blanket, Mu Qianyu lay down again.

But her thoughts refused to quiet.

She didn’t fall asleep until the sky had already begun to brighten.

Just as drowsiness began to settle in, her phone rang.

It was Park Yenxi.

“I’ve been up all night,” Yenxi said. “Your Fifth Aunt, Qiao Yueru, screamed at the Deputy Chief for a full hour. They’ve taken Mu Zhihui to surgery.”

There was no mistaking the exasperation in her voice.

Yenxi clearly wanted to see Mu Zhihui rot in a cell—but he was still a month away from his eighteenth birthday. That gave the Mu family plenty of legal wiggle room to pull some strings.

“My fifth aunt and uncle aren’t the forgiving type,” Mu Qianyu said quietly. “Please be careful.”

“They’ll tread lightly around us,” Yenxi replied. “We’re in uniform. But Su Wuji? He might have to face them head-on. After all… it was on his turf that the brat got his legs snapped, and it was his people who delivered him to our doorstep. This grudge? It won’t be settled easily.”

At the mention of Su Wuji’s name, Mu Qianyu snapped fully awake.

She hadn’t even noticed until now—but Park Yenxi had brought him up several times since last night.

Her thoughts returned to the muffled voice over the phone—Xiao Pang’s report about the drug traffickers.

She hesitated, then ventured a cautious question.

“Yenxi-jie… the people who sold to Mu Zhihui… will they be arrested too?”

There was a pause on the other end.

“We got plenty of leads from Mu Zhihui,” Yenxi finally said. “But we followed them through the night—and didn’t find a single suspect.”

Mu Qianyu’s heart skipped a beat.

Don’t tell me… they really were thrown into the Lin’an River?

Even though she and Yenxi were close as sisters, she chose not to say a word.

Because revealing that would be the same as betraying Su Wuji.

Across town, Park Yenxi was sitting in a tiny steamed bun shop tucked into an alley across from the Lakeside Precinct.

Steam curled from the bamboo baskets as she sipped her soy milk.

Across from her sat a young man, casually eating his soup dumplings.

Her tone held a playful edge.

“My little junior didn’t sell you out. Happy now? I told you Qianyu’s trustworthy—she’s got a spine. But no, you just had to test her. Don’t you trust your big sister?”

The man across from her… was Su Wuji.

He was actually having breakfast—bold as brass—with the Deputy Captain of the Criminal Investigation Unit!

Su Wuji grinned as he looked across the table at the stunning woman in front of him.

“Yanxi, you really saved my ass this time. I honestly don’t even know how to thank you.”

Park Yanxi reached out with a slender, porcelain-white finger and gave his forehead a light poke.

“I’m older than you. Call me ‘Yanxi-jie’. Stop with the casual ‘Yanxi, Yanxi’ all the time. Show some respect.”

Su Wuji immediately waved her off. “No way. If I call you ‘jie’, how am I supposed to chase after you?”

Park Yanxi looked at him, her expression helpless yet soft—and in that moment, was that… a trace of fondness?

She had the quintessential soft-featured look: delicate, serene lines, and eyes like clear springwater. Her face was flawless from every angle—front or profile—and arrestingly beautiful at a glance.

She hadn’t slept all night, and the faint weariness on her pretty face only made her look more delicate, more heartbreakingly lovely.

That gentle aura, paired with the casual drape of a blue denim jacket, gave her a subtle, striking contrast—a quiet elegance overlaid with effortless cool. If she ever set foot in the entertainment scene across the border, she’d be the centerpiece of any girl group in an instant.

Park Yanxi shook her head lightly.

“Wuji, all jokes aside—Qianyu’s a good girl. She’s beautiful, kind, grounded… really, there’s nothing to criticize. You two suit each other. Try being serious for once. Date her properly. Settle down.”

Su Wuji set down his chopsticks and raised a brow with a smirk.

“That line is way too preachy to be from you. Totally out of character. Let me guess—my dear aunt Su Chiyan put you up to it?”

Yanxi didn’t deny it. In fact, she added, “Chiyan-jie handpicked those potential girlfriends for you. They’re all excellent matches. Oh—and she asked me to pass along a message.”

Su Wuji’s smile faded. He slowly put down his chopsticks, narrowed his eyes, and said flatly:

“Don’t try to shackle me with talk of duty and patriotism. I’m just a washed-up rich brat. I can’t carry that weight.”

Park Yanxi looked quietly at his face, then spoke softly.

“Chiyan-jie said to tell you… Today marks twenty-five years since the Su family left the capital.”

“It’s time,” she said. “The next generation must return.”

Translator’s Notes:

[1] Yanxi-jie – “Jie” means “older sister” and is often used as a polite or affectionate term for older women, especially when showing respect or familiarity.
[2] Girl group reference – The “entertainment scene across the border” alludes to South Korea’s K-pop industry, known for its girl groups and idol aesthetics..
